The GRaCE-AGE project explores the use of technology throughout the home to monitor and improve the wellbeing of older people living independently. Today, Dr Buckingham visited a smart house developed by Hft to learn about some of the latest technology available in the field.
A bathroom in the Hft Smarthouse
Hft is a charity providing services to those who live with learning disabilities. As a world leader in the use of assistive technology, Hft conduct personalised assessments and then deliver technological solutions to help those with learning disabilities live more safely and independently.
The Smarthouse is an interactive flat in Tiverton, built by Hft to showcase innovative examples of technology that can be used to provide support in the home for those who need it. While Hft produce solutions for people with learning disabilities, many of the technologies they use could also be useful to older people and those with other types of disabilities.
Some examples of Hft's technological solutions include:
- Kettles that dispense a precise amount of water into a mug
- Floating thermometers to avoid scalding in the bath
- Medication dispensers with visual and audible alerts
- Big button communication aids for those who have trouble communicating

The Smarthouse visit introduced the eGRiST team to new ideas and advancements in assistive technology, and was an interesting and exciting look at some potentially life-changing innovations.
